The remote moves one step for each lean, so the cursor does not run away. If you prefer to keep moving while you hold, switch on auto-repeat in the watch settings. The watch measures from where your arm is when you open the app, and you can set a level pose in its settings. #### Buttons when you want them Every key is also a button, on the watch and on the iPhone: directions, OK, back, menu, play and pause, mute, power, and volume on the Digital Crown. Gestures never replace the buttons, so the remote still works when a lean is not what you want. On watches that support Double Tap, the pinch gesture presses OK. #### Say it to Siri Siri and Shortcuts can press any key, repeat it (“left 5 times”) and switch a TV on by name. The app name is part of every phrase, which is how Siri knows which app you mean. #### Several TVs, one remote Pair as many TVs as you like and switch between them from the watch or the iPhone. A TV that is off can be switched on from the app when the set allows it: through HomeKit if the TV is in your Home, otherwise by Wake-on-LAN, which needs the TV’s own “turn on via Wi-Fi” setting. #### Private by design The iPhone talks to your TV over the local network and nothing else. There is no cloud, no account, no analytics and no tracking. Motion data stays on the watch. A TV remote for Apple Watch and iPhone. On the watch you lean your wrist to move around the TV screen, and every key is also a button. The iPhone holds the connection to the TV. #### Is there an Apple Watch TV remote that works with gestures? Yes. In Remote by Hand you lean your wrist left, right, up or down and hold for a moment, and the TV cursor moves one step. The watch measures the lean from where your arm is when the app opens, so you do not have to hold it in a fixed pose. #### Which TVs does it work with? Android TV and Google TV, and LG webOS. Samsung (Tizen) and Roku are built in but have not been tested on a real set yet, so treat them as experimental. Apple TV and Fire TV are not supported. #### Does it work with Apple TV? No. Apple TV is not supported. Remote by Hand controls Android TV, Google TV and LG webOS sets, and has experimental support for Samsung Tizen and Roku. #### Can I control a Samsung or Roku TV? The drivers for Samsung (Tizen) and Roku are built in, but they have only been tested against scripted exchanges, not a real TV. They may work, but treat them as experimental. #### Does it need an account or the cloud? No. The iPhone talks to the TV over your home Wi-Fi. There is no account, no cloud service, and the app has no analytics or tracking. #### Can I use it without an Apple Watch? Yes. The iPhone and iPad app is a full remote with its own buttons and Siri commands. The watch adds the wrist gestures. #### Does the watch need the iPhone nearby? Yes. watchOS apps cannot open the network connections these TVs use, so the watch sends each key to the iPhone and the iPhone sends it to the TV. The iPhone only needs to be in range, it does not need to be in your hand. #### Can I turn the TV on with it? Often. If the TV is in your Home app, Remote by Hand switches it on through HomeKit. Otherwise it sends a Wake-on-LAN signal, which needs the TV's own setting for turning on over Wi-Fi. A TV that is completely powered down cannot be woken by any network remote. #### Which Siri commands work? Say the app name and a key: “Remote by Hand left”, “OK”, “back”, “play”, “volume up”. Add a count to repeat a key, for example “left 5 times”, and say “turn on the living room TV” to switch a named TV on. Menu, mute and power are available through “Remote by Hand button” and in the Shortcuts app. #### Does it drain the Apple Watch battery? The watch reads its motion sensors only while the app is on screen, and stops when you lower your wrist or leave the app. To keep the screen on while you use gestures, the app holds a watchOS extended runtime session, and releases it after a minute without a command. You can turn this off in the watch settings. #### Is it safe, and what data does it collect? It collects no data. Motion data is processed on the watch and never stored or sent. The app talks only to your TV on the local network, and the TV credentials stay on your devices. #### How much does it cost and when is it available? Remote by Hand is coming to the App Store. The price is announced at launch. More answers on the [support page](https://remotebyhand.278labs.co.uk/support/). ## Your wrist is the remote. Can’t find yours? Send us a message. [Send Feedback](mailto:sapar@278labs.co.uk?subject=Remote%20by%20Hand%20Feedback) ### Getting started #### What does Remote by Hand do? It is a TV remote for Apple Watch and iPhone. On the watch you lean your wrist to move around the TV screen, and every key is also a button. The iPhone app holds the connection to the TV and has the same keys. #### Which TVs work? Android TV and Google TV, and LG webOS. Both have been tested on real TVs. Samsung (Tizen) and Roku are built in but have not been tested on a real set yet, so treat them as experimental. Apple TV and Fire TV are not supported. #### Do I need an Apple Watch? No. The iPhone and iPad app is a full remote with its own buttons and Siri commands. The watch adds the wrist gestures and a remote on your wrist. #### Which devices and systems are supported? iPhone and iPad on iOS and iPadOS 17 or later, and Apple Watch on watchOS 10 or later. The iPhone and the TV need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. #### Is it free? Do I need an account? There is no sign-up and no account of any kind. Remote by Hand is coming to the App Store, and the price is announced at launch. ### Connecting a TV #### How do I pair an Android TV or Google TV? Open the TVs tab on the iPhone, choose the TV, and enter the code the TV shows. The app finds TVs on your Wi-Fi by itself; if yours is not listed, add it by its address or use Scan network. #### How do I pair an LG TV? Choose the TV in the TVs tab and accept the prompt that appears on the TV screen. Pairing is remembered, so it reconnects by itself next time. #### The app says it cannot connect, or keeps saying Connecting. What now? Check that the TV is on and on the same Wi-Fi as the iPhone, and that Remote by Hand is allowed to use the local network in the iPhone’s Settings. If a TV was reset or its remote service was cleared, forget it in the app and pair it again. #### An Android TV will not accept the pairing code. What can I do? On the TV open Settings, Apps, See all apps, show system apps, then Android TV Remote Service. Force stop it, clear its storage and restart the TV. Wait until the TV is fully back on its home screen and try pairing again. #### Can it switch a TV on? When the TV allows it. If the TV is in your Home app, Remote by Hand can switch it on through HomeKit. Otherwise it sends a Wake-on-LAN signal, which needs the TV’s own setting for turning on over Wi-Fi (on LG it is called Mobile TV On), and the app needs to have connected to the TV once while it was on. #### Can I use several TVs? Yes. Pair as many as you like. The one marked active in the TVs tab is the one the watch controls, and you can switch from the watch’s TVs screen as well. ### Wrist gestures #### How do the gestures work? Tilt your wrist and hold it for a moment: left, right, up or down. Return your wrist to level before the next one. The line under the keys on the watch says Ready when a new lean will be recognised. #### A direction is wrong, or a lean sends nothing. What should I do? Tap Centre on the watch while your arm rests where you want level to be. If a direction is still mirrored, change the direction switches in the watch settings. If leans do nothing, try a smaller lean angle or a shorter hold time there. #### Can I make it hold and repeat? Yes. By default one lean is one press. Switch on auto-repeat in the watch settings to keep moving while you hold. #### Does the screen stay on while I use gestures? The watch keeps the app on screen for a short time after your last command, then lets the screen sleep. You can turn this off in the watch settings. Touching the screen or turning the Digital Crown also keeps the watch awake. ### Siri and Shortcuts #### What can I say to Siri? The app name is part of every phrase, for example “Remote by Hand left”, “Remote by Hand OK”, “Remote by Hand volume up” and “Remote by Hand left 5 times”. You can also switch a TV on by the name you gave it. #### Can I use the commands in shortcuts? Yes. The same commands appear in the Shortcuts app, where you can use them in your own shortcuts and automations. ### Privacy #### Does Remote by Hand collect any data? No. The app has no analytics, advertising or tracking, no account and no network requests to the developer. Read the privacy policy at remotebyhand.278labs.co.uk/privacy/ for details. ### Still need help? #### Send Feedback If your question isn’t covered above, send us a message. Introduction This Privacy Policy describes how Remote by Hand (“the Application”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you use the Application on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. By downloading, installing or using the Application, you agree to the terms described in this Policy. ### 2. What the Application Accesses Local network. The Application asks for access to your local network, subject to your authorization through Apple’s system prompt, to find TVs on your Wi-Fi and to send them commands such as direction keys, OK, volume and power. It talks to your own TVs directly. The Application also uses Bonjour to see which TVs announce themselves on the network. Motion sensors. The Apple Watch app reads the watch’s motion sensors to recognise a lean of your wrist. The readings are processed on the watch while the app is on screen. They are not stored, not sent to the iPhone, and not sent to anyone else. HomeKit. If you allow it, the Application reads the names of the homes and accessories on your device, only to find a TV that is already in your Home so it can switch that TV on. It changes no other accessory. Siri. The Application offers voice commands through Apple’s App Intents and Shortcuts. Speech is handled by Apple under Apple’s own privacy practices; the Application receives only the command and its parameters, and the developer receives nothing. Watch and iPhone. The Apple Watch app and the iPhone app exchange commands and status over Apple’s WatchConnectivity, directly between your own devices. ### 3. What the Application Stores on Your Device To work, the Application remembers the TVs you add: a name, the network address and, where the TV provides it, its hardware address, so that a TV that is off can be switched on. It also keeps the credential that each TV issued when you paired: a certificate and private key for Android TV and Google TV, and a token for LG and Samsung TVs. Credentials are kept in the Keychain on your device. It also keeps your settings, for example the lean angle and hold time, and whether you have seen the introduction. A diagnostic log is kept in the iPhone app’s own storage. It records events such as connection state, the commands sent and their results, and may contain TV names and network addresses. It is limited in size and never leaves your device unless you choose to share it yourself, for example to send it to us with a support request. All of this is kept on your devices, is not sent to the developer, and is removed when you delete the Application. You can also forget a TV in the Application, which removes its credential. ### 4. Information We Do Not Collect The Application does not collect, transmit or have access to personal information. It makes no network requests to the developer or to any server of its own. It contains no third-party analytics, advertising, crash-reporting or tracking software development kit (SDK), requires no account, and does not track you across other companies’ apps or websites. ### 5. Third-Party Services The Application does not share information with third parties. Where it uses Apple system services (local network, Bonjour, HomeKit, Siri, Shortcuts and WatchConnectivity), those services are governed by Apple’s own privacy practices, available at [apple.com/legal/privacy](https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/). Your TVs are controlled directly over your network; the TV’s own software and its maker’s services are governed by their own policies. This website uses Google Analytics to understand visitor traffic, only if you accept it in the notice shown on the page. Google Analytics may set cookies and collect information such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you visit. This is separate from the Application, which does not use Google Analytics or any other analytics. ### 6. Children’s Privacy The Application is not directed at children under the age of 13, and the developer does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. ### 7. Your Rights Because the developer does not collect or store personal data about you, there is no developer-held data to access, correct or delete. You keep full control of your TVs and of the permissions you grant. You can withdraw the local network, motion, HomeKit or Siri permission at any time in the system settings of your device. ### 8. GDPR: European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland: the Application does not act as a data controller or data processor for your personal data, because no such data is transmitted to or processed by the developer. The data subject rights in GDPR Articles 15–22 therefore have no developer-held data to apply to. No international transfer of personal data by the developer occurs. ### 9. CCPA/CPRA: California Residents For California residents: the developer does not sell or share your personal information, as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, and has not done so in the preceding twelve months. No personal information is collected, so the rights to know, delete, correct or opt out have no developer-held data to apply to. ### 10. Changes to This Policy This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Application after a change constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy. ### 11. Contact Questions about this Privacy Policy may be sent to the developer at the address below.
